Piazza dei Cinquecento, Rome
The competition entry for Piazza dei Cinquecento in Rome transforms the Termini station square into a dynamic mobility hub. The design of the station area provides Rome with a modern international gateway, upgrading the area around the station. The intervention combines several mobility functions such as the Termini train station, a new bus station, a streetcar terminal and several slow ones. The pedestrian, as the first user of the public space, is central in the project.

The design is inspired by the adjacent Termini gardens and gives a new identity to the square and its surroundings. The design transforms the station square into an extension of Einaudi Street, as a paved pedestrian boulevard. This connects the Termini station with the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Piazza della Repubblica. The diagonal pedestrian boulevard creates a division in the masterplan, each with its own atmosphere: the park zone consisting of new gardens and historic gardens and an urban square connecting Palazzo Massimo, via Cavour, via Giolitti and Largo di Villa Peretti. The diagonal has the characteristics of a boulevard, with a width of 17 meters and is enriched with iconic Roman pine trees.
In front of the Termini station building, the boulevard transforms into a spacious station square. In the southern part, the new covered bus station is located which is recognizable by an organically shaped roof with holes for the pine trees. Between the bus station and the railway station, a lounge area has been designed where passengers wait on elongated seating elements between a group of Japanese multi-trunked cherry trees. The park zone is a connecting green structure between Diocletian’s baths and the Termini station. Several mobility functions are placed in this area such as the entrance to the underground bicycle hub, parking for electric cars and the kiss & ride.
