Langedijk bridges

Restored waterway connection and four new bridges enhance historical and recreational value Zuid-Scharwoude. Bureau B+B has designed a unique family of bridges, integral to restoring the missing link in the blue network between Noord- and Zuid-Scharwoude. The project connects the Achterburggracht to the Machine-sloot by transforming existing culverts in the Bomenbuurt into bridges, thoughtfully integrated with the community’s input.

The new water route bridges the gap between the historic St. Jan de Doper Church with the Kooger Church, featuring various docks that provide access to the water. The docks offer convenient points for water recreation and are connected to the main walking route over the bridges.

Existing culverts have been transformed into a family of four concrete bridges. They are designed to progressively open up to the surroundings as seen from the village street and St. Jan de Doper Church, gradually expanding the view.

The route is enhanced by banks overgrown with flowering herbs and trees, creating an attractive and diverse parkland for walkers, cyclists, and water enthusiasts.

Echoing the historical narrow bridges of the village, the new bridges feature unique patterns in their railings. Thus, they not only fulfill a practical role but also stand as guardians of Zuid-Scharwoude’s rich history and distinctive identity.
