A drive way, a round way and a formal lane make up the main structure.
Healthcare and nursing center Heerewegen is located on a former estate of Stichtse Lustwarande in Zeist. Bureau B+B developed a master plan and a landscape design for this health care institute. The spatial design stimulates the emotional perception of the residents and connects the historical qualities of the estate to create a calming center.
The solitary beech trees and the oak lanes on the estate are over 100 years old. New lanes are added to these monumental clumps and historical lanes. The design is based on the English garden style, with curved paths and focal points. A drive way, a round way, and a formal lane make up the main structure. Cars are only allowed on the drive way. The round way and the formal lane are for slow traffic only. This creates a natural zoning on the site, with a busier area and a quieter area. The lanes, paths and trees define the composition. At the end of the old formal lane, the new main building will give the estate a contemporary and distinguished appearance.
The buildings of the nursing center are placed in a park setting with several surrounding gardens and promenades. The promenades are separated from the traffic routes, so the residents can take a quiet and safe walk. The main paths are accessible for walkers, scoot mobiles and wheelchairs. Slopes and small humps challenge the residents physically. The routes differ in length and lead to attractions such as a fallen tree, hidden sculptures, and an exercise garden. In the exercise garden, people can practice and train as a part of their rehabilitation. For residents suffering from dementia there is a secluded garden. It is a safe place, where plants and birds stimulate the senses.
The secluded courtyard is a safe environment where the flora and fauna create an invigorating experience. The varying heights of flora create separate subspaces. Variation in wet and dry, sunny and shady, creates circumstances for diverse planting. Different walks are possible over paved and unpaved pathways. The garden has friendly borders of hedges and a water element. The addition of children from the nearby daycare center also use the courtyard causing a cross generational interaction benefiting both groups.
